What’s the soundtrack to your coming-of-age story?
In this karaoke-meets-poetry party, writer and performer Michael V. Smith draws on the music that shaped his youth, sharing heartfelt, funny, and tender spoken-word reflections about growing up queer in a small town.
Here’s how it works: audience members volunteer to sing karaoke from any of the 19 iconic albums featured in Smith’s book Soundtrack. Each chosen song sparks a poem, pairing memory with music and weaving Smith’s stories with those of the crowd. Along the way, Smith’s sharp improv and gentle humour invite guests to share why a song matters to them, turning each night into a one-of-a-kind exchange of stories, irony, nostalgia, and joy. Michael will be performing the whole book at Tempest!
Broken into 3 sections in throughout the day and evening. Every performance promises old songs, new insights, and a chance to see how our lives overlap in music.
