Bravery is Vancouver-based Lucas Penner’s guiding light. His upcoming EP, Happy Home is no exception to this rule. Happy Home, engineered by Penticton alumni, Tavis Weir, strips away the ambitious arrangements of his 2023 album, Mergatroid, and has the nerve to be totally bare: one voice, one guitar, three microphones. That’s it. Imperfections and all. It goes straight to the source and showcases Lucas’ chops as a songwriter, singer and storyteller. As an artist. Always evolving, always digging. From his recordings to his live shows, Penner is of the Tom Waits and Jeff Buckley school of artistry: dare, fail and keep going.

This “keeping going” has lead Lucas down many creative pathways: acting in plays (Every Brilliant Thing with Tempest Theatre) and Film/TV (The Last Thing She Said, The Night Agent, LAID), creating indie-rock musicals (Circles), and most recently, co-founding an instrumental rock band called Desert Friends with Joshua Tree-based Antrom Alexander (Lost Palms Oasis, Album).

Lucas’ work is an extension of his father’s eclectic taste, his mother’s operatic emotionality and his uncle’s urban art studios; it is a blend of Toronto’s independent scene, Vancouver’s mountains, and California’s Mojave Desert; it’s a sample of Tom Waits and Jeff Buckley, a tribute to Elliott Smith and Nick Drake and a love note to Fiona Apple.

Lucas is thrilled to be reopening the Dream for the second time, to perform with old friends and musical juggernauts Phil D’Aoust and Terence Wendenburg.
