Introduction to Outdoor Fundamentals for IBPOC, Newcomers & Immigrants

When: September 21st at 9:00am-3:00pm

Location: Meet at SOICS Centre Penticton (340 Ellis St, Penticton, BC V2A 4L7). Event will take place at Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park.

Description: Participants will learn new skills, build safety and confidence, and grow their knowledge of their environment in an inclusive space focused on empowerment to explore and grow. This may include showing best practices in planning for a day outdoors, what to pack, risks to look out for, leave no trace/land stewardship, and more. The workshop objective is that all participants leave the day feeling comfortable planning, preparing, and packing for a day out on the Okanagan trails. Small lunch provided.

About the facilitator: My name is Naomi (she/her). I am a queer Latine woman. I currently live on the Unceded lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and selílwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations in ‘Vancouver’. Outdoor recreation has been a fundamental aspect of my life since I was young. I grew up going camping and canoeing every summer and have now been rock climbing for almost 10 years 🤯. My family is from Honduras and had absolutely no knowledge of outdoor recreation. Needless to say, we have many funny stories to share! It’s my absolute privilege and joy to share my love and knowledge and I am particularly passionate about dismantling barriers to access for Black, Indigenous, and Racialized Folks and challenge the colonial tendencies of outdoor recreation. See you there 😊

Accessibility: Requires the ability to navigate some rocks, roots and uneven terrain. Includes some sections of uphill. Pace will be set so no one is left behind. Shuttle bus provided for participants.

If you need assistance with your registration, please reach out to South Okanagan Immigrant and Community Services.
