Biodiversity and Bald Eagle’s Home for IBPOC, Newcomers & Immigrants
When: October 5th at 9:30am-1:30pm
Location: Meet at SOICS Centre Penticton (340 Ellis St, Penticton, BC V2A 4L7). Event will take place at Naramata Creek.
Description: Join us for a workshop that explores local biodiversity (ktɬəɬtan) from a sqilxʷ/syilx (Okanagan) perspective. Activities include interactive games, paired walks, and brainstorming how to best help local biodiversity thrive. We’ll walk a 2.5 km return trail ending at a waterfall. The trail includes a steep incline near the end and is not wheelchair accessible; however, there is an outhouse at the trailhead and rest breaks will be included. Please bring water, sturdy shoes, and anything else you need to feel comfortable outdoors—snacks will be provided.
About the facilitator: skəkm̓xísaʔt (she/her) is suknaqinx (Okanagan) and was raised in the area now known as Cawston. She has been learning nqilxʷcn/nsyilxcn for the past five years and currently serves as a Language Administrator with the Okanagan Indian Band. Biodiversity holds deep meaning for her, as the language nqilxʷcn/nsyilxcn comes from the land itself. The names of local plants and animals in nqilxʷcn/nsyilxcn have been spoken for thousands of years, with a decline that began around 200 years ago with the arrival of settlers. She believes it is vital to care for and protect the plants and animals that have been here since time immemorial.
Accessibility: Requires the ability to navigate some rocks, roots and uneven terrain. Includes some sections of uphill. Pace will be set so no one is left behind. Shuttle bus provided for participants.
If you need assistance with your registration, please reach out to South Okanagan Immigrant and Community Services.
