The Penticton Art Gallery is all set to launch a significant new exhibition on Saturday, November 18, 2023, delving into the life, art, and enduring legacy of the late Cree Artist, Alvin Elif Constant, affectionately known as “Wandering Spirit” (1946-2006).

The Penticton Art Gallery invites the public to join us as we celebrate the life, art, and stories of the late Cree Artist, Alvin Elif Constant “Wandering Spirit” (1946-2006). This exhibition opens at the Penticton Art Gallery on Saturday, November 18, 2023, and will continue through to Saturday, January 27, 2024.

This exhibition serves as the inaugural chapter of a more extensive initiative committed to documenting, preserving, and celebrating not only the legacy of “Wandering Spirit” but also an entire generation of Indigenous Artists whose exceptional contributions have, until this point, lingered in the shadows of our recorded art history. Our aspiration is that this exhibition will enable us not only to recognize and appreciate the stories, lives, and art of this overlooked generation of artists but also to assist us in recognizing, celebrating, and acknowledging the cultural contributions of these artists and the profound impact they have had on our cultural and artistic landscape.

We are thrilled to announce that Alvin’s sister and niece will be in attendance, offering valuable insights into the artist’s life and guiding a tour of the exhibition from 1:00 to 2:00 pm.
The formal opening is scheduled from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, and we are deeply honored to have the esteemed syilx elder, Richard Armstrong, joining us to provide a special welcome and opening prayer. Your presence and interest in this important exhibition will be pivotal in paying tribute to the legacy of not only Alvin Constant but also an entire generation of contemporary Indigenous Artists.
