Wild Goose Winery

Wild Goose Vineyards & Winery’s award-winning approach to winemaking has been to grow the highest quality fruit and then transform this quality into ultra-premium wines. This is made possible by way of prioritizing innovation in viticulture and viniculture technology. Year after year Wild Goose wines have exhibited the best that Mother Nature has to offer. From carefully tended vines to delicately harvested and vinified grapes, Wild Goose wines are benchmarks of British Columbia winemaking at its best.

Families and groups are always welcome at Wild Goose Winery. Dogs are welcome too!

About Wild Goose’s vineyards

The vineyards of Wild Goose are the heart of the business. Everything is lost or gained in the vineyard. Wild Goose Winery’s properties currently consist of three vineyard sites and our portfolio of wines showcase these as well as beautifully grown fruit by local growers and vineyard partners with which we have solid working relationships.

In Okanagan Falls is a ten-acre parcel located at the winery site. This is home to our Stoney Slope Riesling which is grown in glacial soils on a beautiful south facing slope. Large stones line the rows absorbing the summer heat while the slope allows for maximum sun exposure and drainage. Despite the rough terrain the fruit grown here is highly coveted and lends itself well to late harvest wines. As the slope of the vineyard eases, the soil type transitions to lighter clay. It is in this flat clay loam area of the vineyard that we grow Gewürztraminer of unparalleled quality. The vines are trained to the pendulum bow training system and produce very low yields; consistently reaching desired sweetness, pH and acidity levels thereby producing one of the best Gewürztraminers in Canada.

Trailing the banks of the South Okanagan River near the town of Oliver lays our five-acre Mystic River Vineyard. The soil here is sandy clay and pea gravel without a stone in sight. The fertile land and proximity to the river are a winning combination for our Mystic River Pinot Blanc and Gewürztraminer varietal wines – both two-time recipients of the Lieutenant Governor Award of Excellence.

Our newest addition, purchased in 2018, Sumac Slope Vineyard is comprised of glacial till soil and is located only a short distance from the winery. The site is home to some of our best Pinot Noir vines which produce a very expressive wine that is reflective of the sub-Geographic Indication of Okanagan Falls.

The Bistro at Wild Goose – closed for the season. Watch for re-opening news in April.

The Bistro offers lunch and tapas al fresco on our deck overlooking our scenic vineyards that boast the oldest vines in the region. The newly inspired Bistro menu features fresh, local, farm-to-table ingredients in dishes designed to showcase the flavours and aromas of our award-winning Wild Goose wines (Hint: try Winemaker Nik’s suggested wine pairings with your meal!).

The Bistro is the perfect stop for lunch or late afternoon tapas and share plates, wine-tasting flights, and warm hospitality. We create food for everyone, whether it is hearty and filling or light, savoury or sweet. Come join us in a fun, family-friendly environment.

History of Wild Goose Winery

It all began in early 1983 when founder Adolf Kruger purchased a barren piece of land east of Okanagan Falls. Upon his return to his newly purchased property he discovered a large flock of Canada geese feeding amongst the tumbleweeds, boulders, and rubble. As he approached, the flock of geese took flight and flew to the north.  This vision inspired Adolf to call the property Wild Goose Vineyards.

Adolf first planted Riesling and Gewurztraminer; he quickly secured a contract to sell the grapes to Mission Hill Winery. Over the next few years Mission Hill produced outstanding wines from these aromatic grapes. In the late eighties Adolf and two other parties formed a plan that would allow smaller wineries to make wine using grapes grown on site that could be sold through the “farm gate.” After much lobbying and persistence the farm gate winery was born in British Columbia.

Wild Goose Winery was the seventeenth winery in BC and was established in June 1990.  The winery started producing Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Marechal Foch. Consumers quickly took to the concept of small wineries and flocked to the Okanagan Valley to spend time on the beach, play a little golf, and tour wineries. Over time Wild Goose would establish itself as one of the premium small producers of VQA wines.

In July of 2021, the Wyse family of Burrowing Owl Vineyards proudly announced their acquisition of the tremendously popular Wild Goose Vineyards & Winery. Burrowing Owl Estate Winery’s knowledge and experience in producing ultra-premium wines provide a solid platform for Wild Goose products to continue delivering excellence for years to come.
