Talking Music with Holger Petersen, featuring Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne
Friday, May 25th
Doors 6pm Show 8pm
Holger Petersen, Canada’s favourite blues broadcaster, comes to Penticton for a unique evening of stories and music.
Holger Petersen is host of not one but two of Canada’s longest running blues programs – Natch’l Blues on Alberta’s public radio broadcaster CKUA since 1969 and CBC’s Saturday Night Blues, now in its 31th year.
In addition to interviewing blues and roots music artists since the late 60’s, Holger Petersen is a record producer, label owner, broadcaster, author, educator, festival producer, album collector – and serious music fan. In 1975 he co-founded Canada’s Stony Plain Records which has won thirteen Juno Awards and has been nominated for six Grammy\’s.
Holger is a Founder and past Artistic Director of the Edmonton Folk Music Festival. He was named to the Order of Canada in 2003 and is a recipient of two honorary ‘Doctor of Letters Degrees’ presented by the University of Alberta (2012) and Athabasca University (2004) in recognition of his contributions to Canadian Culture and Public Broadcasting. He was named ‘Best Public Broadcaster’ by the Blues Foundation in Memphis in 2009.
His first book \’Talking Music: Blues Radio and Roots Music\’ was published in 2011 by Insomniac Press. His second book ‘Talking Music2 : Blues and Roots Music Mavericks’ was published in 2017.
Holger comes to Penticton to speak about his experience in radio and will be joined by Dream Café favourite Kenny ‘Blues Boss’ Wayne on piano.
Hailed as “an artist bringing the piano back to the front ranks of contemporary blues,” multiple-award winning blues, boogie-woogie and jazz pianist Kenny Wayne is called “Blues Boss” for a reason. His musical career began as a child prodigy in the 1960s and has continued to flourish for over 50 years with Wayne at the forefront of modern day blues piano practitioners.
As a one-man cheering section for the days when blues and jazz met the roots of rock and roll, Kenny is an artist who’s got it all: talent, charisma and showmanship. Oozing with class and sophistication, Wayne is a throwback to the golden age of classic rhythm and blues while offering a fresh approach to the genre.
CFUZ – Peach City Radio – Penticton’s community radio station – is pleased to bring Holger & Kenny to The Dream Café as part of the CFUZ Listen Up! Speaker Series. Funding for this event contributed by the Community Radio Fund of Canada.
