The Penticton & District Community Arts Council is proud to present our first online exhibition – CanwaxWest’s Brilliant Moments!

This celebration of encaustic painting features over 30 artists from across Canada and the USA.

The exhibition will go “live” at 7:00 pm on May 7, 2020 on the Arts Council’s website.

CanwaxWest is a members group with the mandate to educate the public about encaustic while promoting the work of members. They hold monthly encaustic “circles” at the Leir House and annual workshops that feature internationally celebrated artists working in encaustic from around the world.

What is encaustic? Encaustic is a painting process where beeswax is applied to a surface using a heat application. The wax can be used clear or with the addition of pigments and resins to produce paint. The heat source can be a painting iron, griddle, or even a blowtorch! If you are not familiar with this process, there will be videos demonstrating a variety of encaustic painting techniques on our website.

The PDCAC and CanwaxWest have a long history together that started with Dutch artist Thea Haubrich, who brought encaustic to the South Okanagan, and taught many of the artists featured in this exhibition. The first Brilliant Moments was in 2007 at the Leir House Cultural Centre and continued annually showcasing Haubrich’s students and were the first encaustic only exhibitions in Canada. After Haubrich’s passing in 2013, the members of CanwaxWest took up the Brilliant Moments mantle.

This exhibition will feature a spotlight on Haubrich and her legacy, the history of CanwaxWest, Arts Matter Online activities, and many beautiful and luminous encaustic paintings.

This event is part of the PDCAC’s Art Matter Program – now Arts Matter Online! Please see our website for more online activities, events, and downloads – all free to our community and created by local artists. This program is supported by the City of Penticton and the Province of British Columbia.
