The Penticton & District Community Arts Council is proud to present our first online scavenger hunt featuring CanwaxWest’s Brilliant Moments! We’ve extended the exhibition to June 30th and this gave us time and opportunity to create a fun activity for the public to enjoy while learning more about encaustic, its history, and the amazing artists who use this medium.
The scavenger hunt launches this Friday, May 22nd at 9:00 am at www.pentictonartscouncil.com and runs to Friday, June 5th at midnight. Participants are encouraged to visit each section of the exhibition to find scavenger hunt answers:
- Brilliant Moments – featuring 34 artists working in wax from around the world
- CanwaxWest – learn more about this unique art group
- Remembering Thea – a tribute to the artist who brought encaustic to our area
The scavenger hunt consists of 10 questions and one skill testing question. Everyone is encouraged to participate, but only adults from the South Okanagan are eligible to enter the prize draw. There are 10+ prizes available that may include: gift certificates for Dragon’s Den, gift certificates for the Penticton Arts Council gift shop, and encaustic prizes ranging from books to paintings. Full contest details will be on our website including how to enter.
Scavenger Hunt answers and draw winners will be announced on our website and social media channels on Saturday, June 6th at 4:00 pm.
What is encaustic? Encaustic is a 2000+ year old painting process where beeswax is applied to a surface using a heat application. The wax can be used clear or with the addition of pigments and resins to produce paint. The heat source can be a painting iron, griddle, or even a blowtorch! If you are not familiar with this process, there are videos demonstrating a variety of encaustic painting techniques in the exhibition.
On Friday and Saturday of this week, Penticton Arts Council administrator, Bethany Handfield, will be doing online encaustic demos throughout the day on social media.
CanwaxWest’s Brilliant Moments runs from May 7th to June 30th.
This event is part of the PDCAC’s Art Matter Program – now Arts Matter Online! Please see our website for more online activities, events, and downloads – all free for our community and created by local artists. This program is supported by the City of Penticton and the Province of British Columbia.
