A Penticton Trio: Three's Company Concert
August 1, 2021 / 2:30pm-4:00pm
157 Wade Ave W, Penticton, BC V2A 1T7, Canada
Wynn Nordlund (piano), Boris Ulanowicz (violin), and Sam McNally (horn) present “Three’s Company,” a rare opportunity to hear two works written for the ensemble, side by each!
Johannes Brahms, writing in 1865, wrote his Trio to commemorate his mother’s death earlier in that same year. As such, the work features an alternation between sombre and lighter moments, mimicking his own journey through grief. Brahms gives us some incredibly wrenching moments juxtaposed expertly with lively tunes, leaving none wondering why he continues to tower as one of the greats in the western classical tradition.
Eric Ewazen’s Trio, written in 2012, draws much inspiration from Brahms’ particularly where structure is concerned. Both works feature a slow-fast-slow-fast movement scheme, but there is no question that these works stand fully on their own. Ewazen, known for his surging melodies and driving energy, is in top form throughout the work, taking the listener on a non-stop adventure from the outset to a rousing fugal finish.
It is not terribly often that one gets to hear either of these works and we could not be more thrilled to be presenting them alongside one another. Thank you for your support of live music in our community!
